Whacky Chocolate Orange!
by Farah 'Fairy' Mahdzan (1-Oct-2003) | Readers Say

There was one chocolate that I grew particularly fond of when I was living in America and no, it wasn't American made. This favorite chocolate of mine is imported from England and was delightfully packaged to look like a fruit that many of us recognize as a good source of vitamin C. Needless to say the chocolate quickly became our staple food for munching during study time or get-togethers, and later on we became paranoid about sharing the stuff because it was so darn good!

Unable to find the chocolates in question here in Malaysia, I was hysterically delighted to receive a slightly squished box of this Godsend chocolate recently from a friend who had just returned from the USA. Without Jida's generous deed you wouldn't be sitting here wondering what insane junk food review have I gotten around to writing this time, now would you? And certainly without Jida I wouldn't have developed such a craving for this delectible piece of chocolate! She was the one who brought it to our house in the first place!

Boys and girls, I give you, Terry's Chocolate Orange! Not yours, not mine, but Terry's! Haha, but it's mine now. Mine!

My handsome assistant E.T. has graciously agreed to model with my unopened box of Chocolate Orange in exchange for some metal junk and a broken radio he found inside our tool shed (I wonder...). Together we shall reveal to you the inside out of this marvelous tasting chocolate in its entire orange shape splendor.

Mr. Terry sure didn't name this the "Chocolate Orange" for nothing! It certainly looks like an orange with its orange metallic wrapping and all.

We're not exactly supposed to unwrap this chocolate bugger just quite yet but since you're our favorite reader, oh heck, we peeled away a little bit of the orange wrapping to show you what was hidden inside. Shhh.. be vewy vewy quiet.

See that reader? It's the chocolate ooooooooorange! But how on earth do you eat it? Do you pick it up and start eating it like an uncut apple? Sure, the thought of biting into the delicious-smelling, thick spherical chocolate flavored with a dash of orange might turn some people on, but physically could your jaw really open that wide?? Oh, however does one eat this thing!

Wait! E.T.'s spotted instructions on the side of the Chocolate Orange box, good going alien dude! Two simple pictorial instructions that simply say Whack and Unwrap, and Solid chocolate segments with a tantalizing orange taste (damn straight!). *Shudder* I don't know about you but I'm absolutely melting for some chocolate orange right about now. Must... exercise... self... control... must... finish.. writing... article...

We shall blindly follow the instructions on the box to reduce our chances of getting our jaws locked in an attempt to bite into the luscious... chocolate orange.

See that? Whack and unwrap!

Steady now gang, elevate your chocolate orange around your palm's grasp, defying all forces of gravity on our mini globe friend and just when it least expects, give it to 'em nice and quick...!

Whack the chocolate orange with all your might! Shake the neighborhood into thinking there's an earthquake taking place in your city! For the love of God whack the orange silly! Whack! Whack! Take that and that and that!

Ok let's not overdo it; we want to end up with chocolate orange slices not chocolate powder.

So how did our chocolate orange fare? Did it survive? Did we kill it with our Hulk-like powers?

Would you look at that! How smart is this chocolate? It knows to break off into orange-like slices for folks to pick up and pop into their mouths! All this from a little bit of whacking!

I daresay there are very few anger management programs that let you whack something really hard and break it, only to be rewarded with mouth-watering chocolate orange later! We love you Mr. Terry Chocolate man sir for creating such brilliant chocolate!

ET: E.T. goooo.... hoooooomee...

FM: Suit yourself alien boy, that means more chocolate orange slices for me... yumm....

#37. Terry's Choc orange is available here in Australia. Although I haven't bought one recently - they were, and probably still are, easy to find in any supermarket..! On another junk food-related topic - I remember when I was in Malaysia a couple of years back, the range of 'twisties' flavours was amazing, in comparison to only cheese or chicken flavours available here (supposedly twisties are originally from Aust)....

#36. hey. I love chocolate orange. they sell it in here in Australia but in bars (but still from terry's) for bout $1 (RM 3). Ive been to Malaysia 14 times (since i was born 15 years ago) and there's none there but when i go to the UK there's a whole shelf full of them in the supermarket. Waduh!! Malaysia should really start importing them before i go to Malaysia in 6 weeks time.

#29. My Dad loves a chocolate orange for Christmas, but I am as bit of a chocolate snob, I prefer a higher percentage of cocoa in my chocolate, Green and Blacks, Lindt etc. Does anyone know of any other company, God forbid, that makes a similar orange shape made from nice chocolate?

#25. Hi Fairy,

Do you know what is the official name of that chikadees kat pasar malam? The white ones in the shape of wheels, that come in a plastic bag that is sealed, and it's cheesy flavored? Costs about RM2 a couple of years ago, dunno if it's been increased in cost.

Those things are da bomb!!! Non-stop chewing on those nasty things...

ciao!

#24. Fieza, those chocolate oranges are da bomb aren't they? I hear they've been around for a while, so I'm not entirely surprised that they haven't changed the packaging in over 7 years.

Please don't kill my E.T. He's innocent.

Salmie, you're studying to be a dentist eh? All the best to you! My sister's a dentist.

#20. LINA: To the best of my knowledge this chocolate orange tidak ada di Malaysia. And by the sounds of the gripes from a Singaporean named Rafthah in this comment section, it doesn't seem to be available down there either! I was even speaking to a friend in Holland and he tells me it's not even sold there; he says he gets his supply of Chocolate Oranges from holidaying in England. Heh.

So yeah. Call it C.O.D. (chocolate orange deprivation!).

IKRAM: If you know some concepts of RDBM (relational database mgt) and web app. programming like ASP or PHP, then I can consult you on how to create a similar comment section for your site. Mail me if you want to learn more.

JIDA: An article on good dental hygiene indeed! Thanks for bringing me the Chocolate Orange girl. We owe this article to you!

#17. Nicely done whack, Fairy! I think the Brits created this especially so they can delicately eat their choclates and minimising mess that chocs can make. I would suggest to anyone trying this whack job chockie to try the orange flavored first, as the raspberry is somewhat overpoweringly sweet. Fairy, I think a review on good dental hygiene is due next.
