The Spirit of Ramadan at the Pasar Malam
by Farah 'Fairy' Mahdzan (16-Nov-2003) | Readers Say

Arguably, withholding oneself from food and water for 12 hours during the fasting month of Ramadan is not quite as challenging as having to wake up at 5 o'clock in the morning everyday for sahur, the meal that one eats prior to fasting. Some of us are not willing to disrupt our sleeping pattern and will forego this important meal of the day, resulting in the most aggravating cases of gastric and embarrassing stomach-rumblings during meetings at work. I make an effort to get up for sahur, even if I do sometimes find myself snoozing in the plate of rice in front of me at the dinner table.

However we choose to go about our puasa ritual, everyone looks forward to breaking fast in Ramadan since it first entails shopping around for the best grubs at the local pasar malam (night market) or at those Ramadan food bazaars that only rear their heads once a Muslim lunar year. The tempting aromas of freshly made Malaysian food will make any composed fasting Muslim salivate herself dry!

While I gingerly walked amongst the buying crowd, dodged raindrops and endured the smell of barbequed chicken smoke sticking to my hair, I found solace in observing the exciting hustle and bustle at one of these Ramadan bazaars recently, affirming my love for this country I call home. Today we shall take a peek at some of the sights and scenes of a pasar malam in the heat of Ramadan spirit. These pictures were taken at the Sunday pasar malam in Taman Tun Dr. Ismail (TTDI) on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, guaranteed to make any Malaysian living abroad homesick!

Launch the RAMADAN PASAR MALAM PHOTO ALBUM!

Note: Please view these photos at your own risk; I bear no responsibility for your loss of sanity if you're viewing them while you're fasting away! :)

Paling hanya beberapa pedagang.
Klo mau lengkap ya langsung aja ke pusatnya...psr senen, psr jatinegara, blok M, psr kramatjati (ini dr pengalaman gue selama msh suka ngubek pasar dan pusat perdagangan... ).

Posted by Roedi on 20-Nov-2003, 07:35 MYT

#30. ROEDI: Ga lah, ga mau jadi wartawan gue. I have a job that suits my interests and life goals perfectly fine, writing is just my hobby. If I make writing into work, I don't think I'd be as committed! Evita aja udah quit jadi wartawan.

PALINGMANIS: Ga tau "kue lupis", tapi I know "kuih lapis" hehe. Hmm. Klepon apa pula ya.

IKRAM: Can't expect prices to stay the same, inflation is inevitable as monsoon is in our region. Alah setakat seringgit je increase takde lah heboh sangat. Air tebu tu babe, I'd pay.

ISA: I was determined to pull this article through (thanks to your encouragement juga), Ramadan is just too special for me to pass it up.

I love how there are a multinational of people responding to the photos from this story: Malaysians, Indonesians, Singaporeans and even a Bruneian! I guess we all feel the same pain and joy when it comes to observing Ramadan. Either that or we just have the same favorite foods!

Selamat menghabiskan puasa, tinggal beberapa hari saja lagi.

And keropok lekor...mmm..dah lama tak makan.

Anyway, nice to see you find the time to take the pics, even tho' you're quite busy.

#16. Umar, pembaca Mahdzan.com yang setia.

Raf, apa daa... tak pasal2 kena bambu dengan Miss Singapore kita sorang nih. Maybe this is a sign that you need to pay us a visit real soon!

Anen, I compensated the lack of textual story with 34 gorgeous pictures of the pasar malam complete with blurbs for each and everyone of them, tak cukup kaaa? I've got some other Raya-themed articles coming up (trying to meet the Raya dateline!), so I'm saving my brain cells for those too.

Quite distressing to see a grown man cry eh?

#15. Woi lissa, apa punya statement ni??? "rasa2 anen kat australia sure ngidam kalau tengok gambar2 ni" I didn't realize this until I scrolled down the page. Kalau tengok makanan mesti teringat kat aku noooo....

Fairy, nice report.

Hmm, I almost lost my sanity. I did stare too long at those kuihs and drinks.

My fav'rite food for break fasting: martabak goreng. My mom stuffs 'em with her special recipe of grated corn and ground shrimps.
And the drink: grated melon with cocopandan syrup and milk.

That's what keep me going home for buka even though along the way I pass so many food stalls.

Posted by umar - Website   on 18-Nov-2003, 12:53 MYT

#11. Vaneeda: it's interesting that Bruneians call apam balik "Kuih Malaya!" In Indonesia, this is apparently ""martabak manis."

Hisham: thanks for your encouragement. so far I have not had the displeasure of bringing home basi pasar malam food... yet.

Basrie: wouldn't miss writing about Ramadan for the world!

Syl: you may post about this article on your blog, I'd be delighted.

Lissa: orang kan dah kasi warning babe, hehe. Enter Fairy's photo gallery at your own risk!

Bagas: Here, if we say 'daging' we usually refer to beef. Kalau daging kambing ya 'daging kambing', kalau daging ayam just 'ayam.' Gitu.
Posted by Fairy on 18-Nov-2003, 12:15 MYT

#10. Yummiee..! whoa, I think I should go there for apam balik and yong tau foo. well, you don't prefer teh botol for ifthar fai, seger lho! but you have sirap bandung, while we bandungers do not have any ideas what it is exactly
btw, if malay calls 'daging' tu means beef/mutton instead of chicken or another meat?
lala ngabuburitnya di balubur/simpang yah? apa di kantin SC?
Posted by Bagas on 18-Nov-2003, 11:42 MYT

#9. Hi fairy!

#7. Hiks hiks... gw ga sahur hari ini....

But anyway kalo di Bandung ada ngabuburit... jalan2 sore sebelum buka puasa. lumayan buat nyari pacar.. hehehehehe
Posted by lala on 18-Nov-2003, 09:44 MYT

#6. ahaa ! selamat menunaikan ibadah puasa 1424 H.

Lenguh lutut babe !

#4. I admire your journalistic talent in capturing events, people and issues through the lens and words. Wish I had the same proclivities : ) but I enjoy reading your work. Keep it up, might lead you somewhere fantastic. p/s: Did you notice that some of the traders at the Pasar Ramadhan are quite unscrupulous? They sell food almost spoiled/already spoilt without a guilty conscience I figure, been getting masam/basi food once in a while.
Posted by hisham on 18-Nov-2003, 09:12 MYT

#3. Oh wow, Kuih Malaya with corn bits. *Salivate*
(in Brunei Apam Balik is called Kuih Malaya because it came from... Malaysia? . Also, instead of corn bits we have raisins or sultanas. KM/AB has always been my favourite since I first tasted 'em years ago).

*stomach growls.

Yes, another 'er during sahur. .

Btw, great article and great site. Keep it up!
